Fatherhood is more than a role or a title. It is a journey that begins long before a child is born and continues through every stage of their life. As a father to teenage girls and Co-CEO of SBX Youth & Family Services, I have witnessed firsthand how a father’s presence, behavior, and emotional support profoundly shape a child’s development and future. This blog explores the importance of fatherhood from a personal and authentic perspective, emphasizing how fathers can grow intentionally to strengthen their families and communities.
Fatherhood Begins at Conception
Many people think fatherhood starts at birth, but it truly begins at conception. The way fathers show up for the mother during pregnancy has a direct impact on the child’s early development. Emotional support, encouragement, and active involvement during pregnancy create a positive environment that benefits both mother and baby.
For example, when fathers attend prenatal appointments, help prepare for the baby’s arrival, or simply listen and support the mother’s feelings, they contribute to reducing stress and anxiety. Research shows that lower maternal stress during pregnancy improves fetal brain development and can lead to better health outcomes for the child.
From my own experience, being present during my daughters’ pregnancies helped me connect deeply with them and their mothers. It was a time to learn, listen, and prepare not just physically but emotionally for the responsibility ahead. This early involvement laid the groundwork for a stronger bond that continues to grow.
The Impact of a Father’s Presence Through Childhood and Adolescence
As children grow, fathers influence their lives in countless ways. Their presence shapes a child’s sense of security, self-esteem, and ability to navigate challenges. For teenage girls, having a caring and engaged father can be a protective factor against risky behaviors and emotional struggles.
I have seen how my daughters’ confidence and resilience grew when they knew I was there to listen without judgment, to guide without controlling, and to support their dreams. This kind of emotional availability requires fathers to be intentional about their role, to learn new skills, and to practice humility.
Fathers who actively participate in daily routines, school events, and conversations build trust and open communication. This involvement helps children feel valued and understood, which is essential for healthy development.
Leveling Up as Fathers: Growth, Learning, and Humility
Fatherhood is not static. It demands continuous growth and learning. The idea of “leveling up” means recognizing that being a dad requires new skills, emotional intelligence, and the willingness to change.
This journey involves:
Listening deeply to children’s needs and feelings
Adapting to different stages of development
Seeking support when challenges arise
Owning mistakes and learning from them
At SBX Youth & Family Services, we believe that fathers do not need to be perfect. Instead, they need spaces where they can learn, heal, and grow. This mindset shifts the narrative from “failing fathers” to “fathers with powerful presence.”
How SBX Fatherhood Program Supports Men in Their Journey

The SBX Fatherhood Program, funded through Riverside County, is designed to equip fathers with practical tools, emotional support, and guidance. It creates intentional spaces where men can develop skills to become healthy, stable, and engaged parents.
SBX’s approach recognizes that every father’s presence matters. It encourages men to step into their roles with confidence and compassion, knowing their involvement shapes not only their children’s futures but also the stability of their families.
Encouraging Fathers to Embrace Their Impact
Fatherhood is a powerful force for change. When fathers show up fully from conception through adolescence, they create a foundation for children to thrive. This presence influences emotional health, academic success, and social development.
If you are a father or soon-to-be father, consider how you can level up your skills and deepen your involvement. Programs like SBX Fatherhood offer support and tools to help you grow into the role you want to play.
Your presence matters. Your actions shape futures. By investing in yourself as a father, you invest in your family’s strength and resilience.
